“The exhilarating intensity of Babet’s labour and the array of evocative and resonate objects installed in the space was a powerful reminder of the value that resides in alchemical artworks which seek to transport, affect and move the viewer."

Ella Mudie, RealTime issue #110 Aug-Sept 2012

Artist Bio

Babet graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts First-Class Honours and the University Medal for Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales in 2010. With formal training in architecture, Babet’s work traverses a spectrum of disciplines and medium, exploring ‘the uncanny’ through space, place, the body and object. His work is often site-specific whereby the body is central to investigations and interventions in the landscape.

Whilst residing in Berlin from 2006-2008, Babet studied under Katharina Sieverding, Hito Steyerl and David Lamelas at the Universität der Künste (UDK), Berlin. He has exhibited both locally and abroad at Gallery Barry Keldoulis (GBK), CarriageWorks and Tin Sheds Gallery, Sydney; Quergalerie UDK and Volksbühne, both Berlin; Regina Rex, New York; and was a founding member of Eastern Bloc Gallery, Sydney. Selected as a finalist, his work Unheimliche Heimat (Uncanny Homeland) featured in the 2011 Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship at Artspace in Sydney, whilst his profile has garnered interest in Art Collector, The Sydney Morning Herald Spectrum, Bushwick News, New York and Realtime. In 2013, Babet undertook a four-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Babet’s recent exhibition Lurking at the Threshold in 2015 was the culmination of three years of research in Australia, Germany and France through his Master of Fine Arts by Research degree. Drawing upon Vladamir Nabakov’s quote ‘The future is but the obsolete in reverse’, the exhibition reflects upon our perception of time and relationship with nature through the juxtaposition of signifiers both past and present. These binaries attempt to reveal gaps and temporal rifts that act as site of resistance to traverse time, explore future as past and interrogate a return to nature in an industrialised age of technology.
